Most homes built today with basements have sump pumps and in older homes that are prone to flooding or water buildup in crawlspaces and low-lying cellars.

There are two common types of sump pumps – Submersible sump pumps and pedestal sump pumps. The submersible pump is usually housed in a sump pit. Water drains into the sump pit by gravity or through drains. With a pedestal sump pump, the motor is located above the sump pit.

Both pumps push water out of the pit through the inlet pipe when the water becomes high enough in the pit to activate the float. The outlet pipe should be fitted with a one-way in order to prevent the water from falling back into the pit. Outgoing water is usually sent to your lawn or into the municipal sewer system.

Ejector pumps are very similar to sump pumps with the exception that they are used for pumping sewer water rather than standing water or ground water in a basement.  Usually ejector pumps are installed in houses that currently have or will have a bathroom that is below the level of the main sewer line. They have to push sewage water up to the outgoing pipes. Ejector pumps, are also known as solid waste ejector pumps or sewage pump ejectors. Ejector pumps  are sometimes used to pump out water from washing machines and/or laundry tubs that are located in basements.
